MIAMI -
Among the crush of tourists and beyond the headlines of police shootings are recording artists like the 26-year-old musician known as Shifta. He will be among many artists hoping to make it big during Urban Beach weekend.

Born in Jamaica and raised in Miami, where he graduated from Coral Reef High School and FIU, Shifta blends Caribbean dancehall traditions with new electronic sounds in his music. Singing, and sometimes rapping, Shifta records in South Florida at C-Rod Studios in Doral. His label, Miami-based Timeless Records, was created more than two years ago, but has been up and running for a year.

"I would definitely call it Caribbean fusion," Shifta said of his energy-infused music.

He and his business partner, Chris Thomas, believe music was always the backbone of Urban Beach Week; a few days that have gotten a bad rap.

"You have bad apples that -- they, unfortunately, reflect on the majority of people," Shifta said.

"How often do you have a lot of people from the music industry in one location for three days?" Thomas said.

Urban Beach weekend typically draws thousands of revelers to South Beach. Thomas said the opportunity for an up-and-coming artist to meet a big name star can be a career starter. Rubbing elbows with the industry's elite isn't uncommon at all.

"Maybe you have an opportunity to just personally hand your demo and they may listen to it. Change your life," Thomas said.

This weekend, Shifta won't be alone hitting clubs and working connections.

"We'll just concentrate on interacting with the fans," Shifta said.

He'll promote his new CD on Timeless Records called Plan B, and spread the message that music can heal any rift.

"I just hope this weekend that everybody's careful -- everybody's on their best behavior. And we show the world, especially those who don't want this weekend to continue, we can create a positive environment. It's very important," he said.

Malia Obama Mexico spring break story disappears from Internet

http://www.nma.tv/
News sites have pulled a story on Malia Obama's spring break vacation in Mexico amid apparent pressure from the Obama Administration.

Despite travel warnings issued by the Department of State, the 13 year old is currently taking in the sights of Oaxaca without her parents, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle. She isn't alone; Malia has with her 25 Secret Service agents, which has drawn the ire of Internet commenters who see the entourage as excessive government spending.

By all accounts, the story was originated by Agence France Presse on Monday and quickly spread to other news outlets like The Daily Telegraph, The Huffington Post and Daily Mail.
However, the story began disappearing from the sites later in the day.

The First Lady's office acknowledged it had "reminded outlets" to respect Malia's and her younger sister Sacha's privacy, suggesting that the offending sites were influenced by the Obama Administration to pull the vacation story. Surprisingly, once news broke of a strong earthquake in Mexico, the White House confirmed Malia was in the country and wasn't in harm's way.

Reaction to the NY earth quake

An underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale was reported Tuesday morning, at 10:46 a.m., 79 miles south-southeast of Southampton.

"It was widely felt with some reports coming in from Bergen County, New Jersey. "It was a small earthquake but large for this area." The earthquake also was felt in the New York Metropolitan area.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday there had been no aftershocks from the earthquake, which occurred in a spot about 4 miles below the ocean surface.

The quake was felt in East Hampton.

The building that houses the East Hampton Press on Railroad Avenue in East Hampton also shook.

Earthquakes are not unheard of in the Long Island area, with five reported in the last 20 years, he said. The most recent one, in August 2009, had a magnitude of 2.4. The largest one in that time frame was a 4.7 quake in 1992.

Southampton Town Police in Bridgehampton reported two calls from citizens who reported feeling the earthquake. East Hampton police said they received one call from someone who was inquiring about the earthquake.

Southampton Town Police reported two calls from people in Sagaponack and Hampton Bays, who reported feeling the earthquake; Southampton Village Police said they did not receive any calls.

An information specialist from the U.S. Geological Survey, said the service had received reports from Southampton, Water Mill, Eastport, Westhampton and Westhampton Beach and from virtually all of the states in the Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic States Virginia and West Virginia.

Announcement of a simple one-day suspension for four student-athletes at Riverhead High School went viral on Thursday as news broke that the students — who administrators say were creating an unsafe environment by blocking the halls — were emulating one of the most talked-about athletes in America over the past two weeks: Tim Tebow.

There is a new craze going on it's called Tebowing.
In an act known as "Tebowing" according to Tebowing.com, "to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different" According to reports the foursome was part of a larger group seen in a YouTube video kneeling in the halls of the school. One of the students told Yahoo! it was "out of respect for Tebow, and because 'Tebowing' is the new thing to do."

As you know Tebow a second-year quarterback who has led the Denver Broncos to six straight wins is known for his devout Christianity and intensity on and off the field. The act has gained popularity as the Broncos have continued to pile up late-game wins.Riverhead High School students suspended for Tebowing

Snow Storm East Coast US October 29th 2011 New York New Jersey Connecticut News Story

Northeast Snowstorm Leaves Millions Without Power

Unseasonal snowstorm hits US Northeast

Snow Storm(East Coast, US) October 29th 2011

Reports say power to more than 3 million homes and businesses across the Northeast on Sunday in large part because leaves still on the trees caught more snow, overloading branches that snapped and wreaked havoc. Close to 2 feet of snow fell in some areas over the weekend, and it was particularly wet and heavy, making the storm even more damaging "You just have absolute tree carnage with this heavy snow just straining the branches," said National Weather Service spokesman From Maryland to Maine, officials said it would take days to restore electricity, even though the snow ended Sunday The storm smashed record snowfall totals for October and worsened as it moved north. Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit. Snowfall totals topped 27 inches in Plainfield, and nearby Windsor had gotten 26 inches by early Sunday. It was blamed for at least 11 deaths, and states of emergency were declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.
Roads, rails and airline flights were knocked out, and passengers on a JetBlue flight were stuck on a plane in Hartford, Conn., for more than seven hours More than 800,000 power customers were without electricity in Connecticut alone shattering the record set just two months ago by Hurricane Irene. Massachusetts had more than 600,000 outages, and so did New Jersey including Gov. Chris Christie's house. Parts of Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Maryland and Vermont also were without power."It's going to be a more difficult situation than we experienced in Irene," Connecticut Gov. said. "We are expecting extensive and long-term power outages."Thirty-two shelters were open around the state, and Malloy asked volunteer fire departments to allow people in for warmth and showers. At least four hospitals were relying on generators for power.Around Newtown in western Connecticut, trees were so laden with snow on some back roads that the branches touched the street. Every few minutes, a snap filled the air as one broke and tumbled down. Roads that were plowed became impassible because the trees were falling so fast One of the few businesses open in the area was a Big Y grocery store that had a generator. Customers loaded up on supplies, heard news updates over the intercom, charged up their cell phones, and waited for a suddenly hard-to-get cup of coffee in a line that was 30 people deep and growing. Many of the areas hit by the storm had also been hit by Irene A rare October snowstorm engulfs the heavily populated US Northeast with some areas bracing for up to a foot of snow and major power cuts.
Winter Snow Storm on October 29th 2011 Technically Fall is reaching its peak.. so its unusual to have this type of weather so early but not impossible.
