By Marta Abel

"How are you transforming the way your community works with money?"

That was one of the questions we asked the five recipients of the RSF Community Capital Scholarship to attend the 10th Annual Business Alliance for Local Living Economies Conference. RCS Community Garden; Fairtrade Caber Coffee; Social Entrepreneurship at WCU - CSR Minute 7/9/12

Retail Construction Services, a national general contractor, has donated 7,400 pounds of fresh produce in the last three years from its 6,000 square-foot Giving Garden, which was formerly landscaped corporate turf. The initiative has expanded to include teaching, mentoring, and giving programs with students from schools, churches, and corporate partners. A member of the U.S. Green Building Council, R.C.S. creates and manages construction projects in an ecological and resource-efficient manner.

"Coffee with a Conscience" is the mission of the latest brand of the beverage to be launched under the Fairtrade label. Named Ethyco, it's the product of Aberdeen, Scotland-based Caber Coffee, which will re-invest two percent of Ethyco's sales in local UK social enterprise projects.

Western Carolina University's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation will offer a new freshman seminar course with a focus in social entrepreneurship in fall 2012. The first-time course will guide students to develop a business idea that is focused on financial sustainability and also addresses an important social need.
