Flood disaster kills over 170, affects 24000 in southern Russia

Russia's Krasnodar region is coming to terms with the sheer scale of the devastation inflicted after flash floods struck overnight on Friday. Many people woke up to a nightmare, with their loved ones simply washed away into the darkness.
At least 171 people died in the deluge. Thousands of houses were swamped, affecting over twelve thousand residents. RT's Tom Barton is in the worst-hit town... he spoke to some of the survivors of the tragedy.

US Soldier Kills 16 Afghans, Deepening Crisis

An American soldier opened fire on villagers near his base in southern Afghanistan Sunday and killed 16 civilians, according to President Hamid Karzai, who called it an "assassination." Nine children and three women were among the dead.

News Wrap: Hit-and-Run Bombing Kills Top Iranian Nuclear Scientist

In other news Wednesday, assassins struck a new blow at Iran and its nuclear program. A hit-and-run bombing killed a top nuclear scientist in Tehran. Also, in Israel, the head of the military suggested that things might happen "unnaturally" to Iran in 2012.

News Wrap: Blast in Pakistan Hits Anti-Taliban Militia, Kills at Least 30

In other news Tuesday, a bomb tore through a busy market in Northwest Pakistan, killing at least 30 people. The blast hit vehicles of an anti-Taliban militia in the Khyber region near the Afghan border. Also, U.S. forces staged another sea rescue of Iranians in distress.

News Wrap: Another Wave of Bombings in Iraq Kills at Least 78

In other news Thursday, another wave of bombings struck in Iraq, killing at least 78 people. It was the second such coordinated attack since U.S. troops left the country last month. Also, the government of Myanmar announced that the party of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be allowed to run in upcoming elections.
