Flood disaster kills over 170, affects 24000 in southern Russia

Russia's Krasnodar region is coming to terms with the sheer scale of the devastation inflicted after flash floods struck overnight on Friday. Many people woke up to a nightmare, with their loved ones simply washed away into the darkness.
At least 171 people died in the deluge. Thousands of houses were swamped, affecting over twelve thousand residents. RT's Tom Barton is in the worst-hit town... he spoke to some of the survivors of the tragedy.

BREAKING NEWS: Over 100 killed as tsunami-like flood hits southern Russia July 7, 2012
More than 140 people have been killed in a devastating flood in Russia's southern Krasnodar region. It's the worst of its kind in nearly a century, and the death toll continues to rise.
Russia's Interior Ministry has confirmed a total 144 deaths, but that number is likely to rise.

Up to 13,000 people have been affected by the disaster. A state of emergency has been declared in the cities of Krymsk, Novorossiysk, and Gelendzhik. In the Krymsky district alone, at least 130 bodies have been recovered. Two more have died in Novorossiysk, and nine more in the Gelendzhik district. A 10-year-old child was among the victims.
The speed of the flood was shocking, carrying away not only homes, but 16-ton trucks as well. One driver said his truck was literally carried tens of meters by the waters. In a separate incident, a nine-year-old girl was ripped from her mother and sister's arms by the force of the current.
Emergencies Ministry rescue teams and helicopters have been dispatched to the scene in order to join the rescue and repair efforts already underway in the region. Over 10,000 rescue officers and 140 helicopters are currently working at the scene.
Krasnodar regional authorities have declared July 9 a day of mourning.
Man electrocuted as four die trying to save him
Five people in Gelendzhik were electrocuted to death after a wire fell into the water. A man trying to cross a puddle next to a store on Kerchenskaya Street was the first to receive fatal injuries. Two women and another man rushed to help him, but were also killed by the electric current. A third man later approached the four bodies, and was himself electrocuted to death, his body carried away by the oncoming flood waters.
Over a meter of water crashed over the intersection of Ostrovsky and Kirov Street in the center of Gelendzhik, ripping up the pavement and sweeping away everything in its path. According to the city administration, 5,000 homes have been flooded.
Children's summer camps evacuated
Authorities in the Perm region of Russia dispatched their own rescue team to evacuate dozens of children who were at local summer camps as the storms hit.
"The children have no contact with the Ministry of Emergencies or the local authorities in Gelendzhik. For two days now they have been without supplies and electricity," said Viktor Basargin, Governor of the Perm Region. "We have decided to take action on the issue of their evacuation."
So far, 74 children have returned home. Some 115 more are said to be an area unaffected by the disaster, so the supervisors of their camp decided the kids could continue their holiday.
There is growing concern over the tourist population in the area. The land is popular with campers and tourists for its proximity to the Black Sea. This year alone 7,130 Russian children went camping in the surrounding territory, Russian Vice-premier Olga Golodetz announced in the wake of the disaster.
However, Governor Tkachyov emphasized that the all the camp grounds in the area appear to be safe: "Practically all the campgrounds are in normal condition, nothing is threatening the lives of the children." The only campground that has suffered as a result of the flooding was the "Azure Shore" campsite, which was without power.
Tkachyov nevertheless supported Basargin's decision to evacuate the children.
Six months' worth of rain in two days
The flooding occurred in the aftermath of a giant storm that swept through the region. The region experienced almost half a year's worth of rainfall over the last two days.
The most heavily affected areas are along the Russian Black Sea coast, which bore the brunt of the torrential waters as they rushed out to sea.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin as well as Emergency Minister Vladimir Puchkov and the Minister of Regional Development Oleg Govorun have visited the affected area.
"We are in the process of identifying the victims -- some are local residents, some are vacationers," said Zhelyabin. The local police have formed an emergency commission to deal with the situation as reinforcements arrive from Moscow.
Governor of the Krasnodar region Aleksandr Tkachyov surveyed the damage in the Gelendzhik and Krymsky districts from a helicopter in order to estimate repairs, sending updates on the situation via Twitter. "It is spectacular, to be sure, and very tragic. The water came with such force that it tore up the asphalt," the governor wrote, commenting on a picture of one of the main streets of the city where the flood hit hardest.

At least three people have been injured as Polish and Russian football fans clashed in Warsaw. Police was forced to fire warning shots and use water cannons to break up the fighting.
According to reports, the Russians were marching through the capital when they were attacked by a mob of Polish youths.
Preliminary reports say at least 3 people were injured, and had to be taken to a nearby hospital for treating head injuries. At least one of the injured was a Polish national, with no information available on the other two casualties.
Warsaw police was forced to fire warning shots and use water cannons to break up the fighting, but clashes in the capital continue. Local news reports police using tear gas against the hooligans, who in turn are throwing stones and firebombs at the police.
Earlier in the day, a mob of some 50 Polish fans attacked a café in central Warsaw where Russian football supporters had gathered before the match. The Polish fans were wearing masks and threw smoke grenades and stones at the cafe. As the Russians fought back, the attackers retreated. One Russian suffered serious head injuries. Police arrived at the scene after the incident was over.
The Russian fans' march was set to coincide with Russia Day, celebrated on the 12th of June, and was sanctioned by city authorities.

The New York Times Lies Compete With CNN & Fox News In Attacks To Destabilize Russia
In the recent article Russophobes in The New York Times continue attacks against elections in Russia and called Western founded group Golos "Russia's only independent election monitor". In the same article The New York Times acknowledges that Golos "receives most of its budget from Western governments".
What would Americans say if they found their polling stations and certain political parties entirely infiltrated by Chinese money, Chinese observers, and Chinese-backed candidates promoting China's interests in an AMERICAN election? The answer ranges from incarceration, to trials featuring charges ranging from fraud, to sedition and even treason with sentences ranging from decades to life in prison, perhaps even death, as well as possible military action for what could easily be considered an act of war.
Indeed, the attempted subversion of a foreign nation and/or meddling in its elections are acts of war, an act of war the United States government through its various "Non-Governmental Organizations" (NGOs) have been committing on and off for decades around the globe. In fact, the very "Arab Spring" is a geopolitical conflagration tipped off by this vast network of Western backed NGOs.
The New York Times in its article, "U.S. Groups Helped Nurture Arab Uprisings," clearly stated as much when it reported, "a number of the groups and individuals directly involved in the revolts and reforms sweeping the region, including the April 6 Youth Movement in Egypt, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and grass-roots activists like Entsar Qadhi, a youth leader in Yemen, received training and financing from groups like the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute and Freedom House, a nonprofit human rights organization based in Washington."
The Times would continue by explaining, "the Republican and Democratic institutes are loosely affiliated with the Republican and Democratic Parties. They were created by Congress and are financed through the National Endowment for Democracy, which was set up in 1983 to channel grants for promoting democracy in developing nations. The National Endowment receives about $100 million annually from Congress. Freedom House also gets the bulk of its money from the American government, mainly from the State Department."

This is not the first time Russia has faced this insidious creep from abroad. After the fall of the Soviet Union, there proceeded a lawless free-for-all where foreigners began rushing in in an attempt to create their own order out of the chaos. Leading this charge was billionaire oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky who fashioned an "Open Russian Foundation" after George Soros' Open Society Institute, and even had western corporate-financier elitists Jacob Rothschild and Henry Kissinger chair its board of directors. In a now all too familiar scenario, Khodorkovsky and his networks of foreign-funded NGOs attempted to consolidate and transfer Russia's wealth, power, and the destiny of its people into the hands of Wall Street and London's global "corporatatorship."
Russia, however, was not entirely defenseless. In a devastating backlash, Khodorkovsky was thrown into a Siberian prison where he remains to this day, while other oligarchs serving Western interests scattered like cockroaches back to London and New York. In a hollow attempt to portray Russia's efforts to preserve its national sovereignty as "human rights abuses."
Why opposition groups and foreign-funded NGOs who have a direct vested interest in preventing Putin's United Russia Party from obtaining a clean victory at the polls, should be trusted to reveal "mass election fraud" in the first place, is never quite explained by The New York Times, CNN & Co.
