Misleading Advertisement Hits Local Newspaper

VICTORIA -- It looks like a typical newspaper article only it's an advertisement for uncut American one-dollar bills.

The advertisement in Wednesday's edition of the Times Colonist lists several Canadian postal codes and tells readers if their code qualifies than they are eligible to purchase the limited bills. The bills are listed as costing face-value after the purchase of a $39 dollar case.

Mike Tarantino of A.A.A. Stamp, Coin, Jewellery Inc. says the advertisement is confusing: "I'm still not sure after reading it if they're offering me this for four dollars or for 40 dollars".

Potential buyers are asked to call the World Reserve Monetary Exchange Inc. within 48 hours to receive the deal.

After calling the number listed, CTV News discovered the deal would cost $129 dollars. The price wasn't listed anywhere on the advertisement.

The Better Business Bureau in Victoria says it's misleading and confusing but not illegal.

"They're not guaranteeing anything so there are no lies on the page, but the type of advertising is a type we don't like," says Rosalind Scott with the Better Business Bureau.

A salesman with the company says the bills will be available after the 48-hour deadline but buyers should expect to pay more.
