Muslim's hardships in Today's United States with Tariq Ramadan

In June 2012 St. Anthony City Council in Minnesota barred Muslims from building an Islamic Centre in the area. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) believed that the rejection was the result of anti-Muslim bias. In 2010 the building of Cordoba Centre in New York, also called Park 51 project, partially stopped by the opponents, including number of American politicians, who believed it was insulting to build a mosque near the Grand Zero. Muslims are targeted by systematic state surveillance, hatred and social discrimination.

There were incidents that Muslim workers have lost their job over prayer dispute or wearing headscarves. In 2010 an American pastor in Florida announced that he would burn copies of the Quran in the anniversary of 9/11. Polls among them a survey by Pew Research Center shows that 55 percent of Muslim Americans believe it is more difficult to be a Muslim in the United States since 9/11. This week's Islam and Life asks: How hard is it to be a Muslim in today's United States?

Police chief angers NY Muslims

The appearance by the New York police department commissioner, Ray Kelly, in a film depicting an "Islamic flag" over the White House and Muslims shooting Christians has angered the city's Muslim population.

The Muslim community sees the screening of the film to 1,500 trainees and Kelly's participation in it - which he at first denied but later admitted to after his appearance became public knowledge - as part of a pattern of discrimination against their community.

Nigerian police raids anger local Muslims

Following last Friday's attack that left 185 people in Kano state dead, Nigerian police raided a house in the northern state looking for members of Boko Haram, the Islamist armed group thought to be behind the attacks.

Tuesday's raid led to an hours-long gun battle with police, with family members claiming that a husband and wife were among those shot and killed by police gunfire, and denying that they had any part in last week's attack.

Locals say that authorities are unfairly targeting the most devout Muslims of the community.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from Kano.
