New York Times reporter Don McNeil ripped publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr. for piloting a "ghost ship" and being being overly fond of management fads and leadership gurus as the paper languishes amid labor strife, in an email sent to roughly 150 New York Times employees. McNeil said Sulzberger spends too much time traveling overseas and speaking at conferences while the New York Times and its staff are in open conflict over the latest collective bargaining agreement and the paper lacks a proper CEO (Sulzberger currently serves as interim CEO).
"[O]ver the last 20 years, Arthur has adopted a series of management consultants." McNeil writes in the email, which was published by Gawker. "First there was W. Edwards Deming, who led workshops having NYT staffers form 'quality circles.' Then there was one whose name I forgot who had us all post plastic-coated cards with 'The Rules of the Road' on our desks ... Then there was Jim Clemmer and his 'Put the Moose on the Table' philosophy that led Arthur to bring the infamous stuffed moose to the town meeting that finished off [former executive editor] Howell Raines."
Sulzberger is scheduled to go on a trek in the Himalayas with his latest corporate guru crush, Wharton School of Business professor Michael Useem.
"We put out a great newspaper every day," McNeil said. "But outside the newsroom, at the corporate level, we're sailing on a ghost ship."

This is, of course, only the tip of the iceberg, yet demonstrates the growing apparatus aimed at American dissenters in the Homeland.
GUEST EXPOSES PUBLIC SCHOOL AGENDA: Filmmaker Colin Gunn joins Alex in-studio to give an inside look at his film IndoctriNation, exposing the nation's public school system and its attempts to corrupt our youth and ready them for state control, all while undermining traditional Christianity. With an eye on homeschooling as an alternative, Gunn breaks down the moral and ethical degradation posed by the modern school system.
Meanwhile, with fresh public outrage at the SOPA and PIPA bills restricting the Internet, the Obama Administration now seeks backing for an international treaty signed by the President back in October known as the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which hands over even more extreme controls over the online sector.
For their part, Polish websites went dark to protest their government's plan to sign the international copyright treaty.
An annual report released by Reporters Without Borders highlighted the sad decline of the free press in the United States, with emphasis on the arrests of many journalists who covered the Occupy Wall Street protest movement. Meanwhile, cheats in government skipped out on more than $3.4 billion in taxes, according to a new report from IRS records. Those records show that employees of the federal government (both current and former) as well as military personnel owed a combined $3,420,168,684 in unpaid taxes.
Oklahoma State Senator Ralph Shortey hopes to stop Pepsi from using aborted fetus cells in soda flavoring research through his proposed legislation. He opposes the use of aborted embryonic cells to create "isolated human taste receptors, and hopes to discourage the research before it becomes common practice. UN approves Syria monitor mission
The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution that authorises an initial deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers to Syria for three months to monitor a fragile week-old ceasefire in the country's 13-month old conflict.
The Russian and European drafted resolution said that deployment of the UN observer mission, which will be called UNSMIS, will be "subject to assessment by the Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon] of relevant developments on the ground, including the cessation of violence".
Saturday's resolution also noted that the cessation of violence by the government and opposition is "clearly incomplete".

Treyvon, of Miami Gardens, died Feb. 26, after George Zimmerman called Sanford Police to report someone suspicious in his gated townhouse complex. The call was one of many from the 28-year-old Zimmerman to police over the years; it was also one of several when he called to report the presence of a black male. Zimmerman, an aspiring police officer who once attended a citizen police academy, told police he fired in self defense after the young man came at him from behind and attacked him. He was not charged, sparking national outrage that has spread to Congress.
ABC News has uncovered questionable police conduct in the investigation of the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white neighborhood watch captain in Florida, including the alleged "correction" of at least one eyewitness' account.
Sanford Police Chief Billy Lee said there is no evidence to dispute self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman's assertion that he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin out of self-defense.
"Until we can establish probable cause to dispute that, we don't have the grounds to arrest him," Lee said. Martin had been staying at his father's girlfriend's house during the night of the NBA All-Star game Feb. 26. The teenager went out to get some Skittles and a can of ice tea. On his way back, Martin, wearing a hood, was spotted by Zimmerman, 28.
According to law enforcement sources who heard Zimmerman's call to a non-emergency police number, he told a dispatcher "these a..holes always get away." Zimmerman described Martin as suspicious because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and walking slowly in the rain. A dispatcher told him to wait for a police cruiser, and not leave his vehicle. But about a minute later, Zimmerman left his car wearing a red sweatshirt and pursued Martin on foot between two rows of townhouses, about 70 yards from where the teen was going. Lee said Zimmerman's pursuit of Martin did not of itself constitute a crime.
Witnesses told ABC News a fist fight broke out and at one point Zimmerman, who outweighed Martin by more than 100 pounds, was on the ground and that Martin was on top. Austin Brown, 13, was walking his dog during the time of the altercation and saw both men on the ground but separated. Brown along with several other residents heard someone cry for help, just before hearing a gunshot. Police arrived 60 seconds later and the teen was quickly pronounced dead.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey website and wire reports, what was going on, was a 5.9-magnitude quake that struck about 34 miles west of Richmond, Virginia, sending tremors up the coast to D.C., Philly and New York.
And to that one Tweeter who felt President Obama was conspicuous by his absence in the capital, hold your horses. The president and his family, vacationing on Martha's Vineyard, might have even felt a little shaking, along with those living in parts of Rhode Island and Vermont. Yep, the tremors reached all the way up there, and out west to parts of West Virginia and Ohio. Airports grounded East Coast-bound flights, though Philly International is back up and running after being closed briefly to inspect whether there was damage to the runways.
Those D.C. seemed to be the most shaken up -- literally -- being so close to the epicenter of the quake. Communications were down, too, as emergency switchboards were jammed with people calling to ask just what the heck was going on.
In New York, several buildings were evacuated. Wobbling was felt in some of the taller buildings, according to reports, and people seemed more than just a little put out by the phenomenon.
"Sitting through earthquakes -- not my job description," one New Yorker groused on Facebook.
So far, there are no reports of injuries or damages in Philly or New York. In Philly, the Comcast Center is closed and all City Council employees sent home for the day, and SEPTA is running behind schedule (usually don't need an earthquake for that to happen). Mayor Nutter gave the all-clear for city workers to resume their duties and there WILL be baseball tonight at Citizens' Bank Park.
Things seem to be going back to normal in New York, too. In D.C., where the quake hit hardest, there are several reports of injuries, but nothing life-threatening. The USGS says to expect aftershocks, but they likely won't be anywhere close to the scale of what was experienced on Tuesday.
The biggest concern in D.C., at this point, is the lag time in getting in touch with someone the old-fashioned way -- on the phone. A D.C. Facebooker complained that she could not reach her mother to let her know she was all right because she could not get a signal to her cellphone. But it was all right -- her mother was one of her Facebook friends and left a smiley face and a "Whew!" on her daughter's wall to let her know the message had been received.

They aren't willing to take weeks or months of demagoguery on Fox over the question of whether movie theaters have to tell us just how bad their popcorn is." Two people died last evening and several others were seriously injured in an accident involving three vehicles near Ruaka shopping centre in Kiambu County. The driver of one of the vehicles, a 14 seater matatu is said to have lost control, veering off the road and slamming against another matatu and a personal car. The two who perished died on the spot. Those injured in the accident were rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.

Traders in Eldoret are protesting over the filthy state of their working environment. The traders at the largest market centre in the North Rift accuse the Eldoret Municipal Council of failure to clear the garbage even though they have paid all their dues to the Council.
